HAKAN AKKAYA’S “JUSTICE” COLLECTION – NYFW FALL/WINTER 2020
NEW YORK, NY (February 2020) – Hakan Akkaya makes a strong statement of feminine strength and cultural melding for Fall/Winter 2020-2021.
Crayonbox had the privilege of attending yet another HAKAN AKKAYA’s runway show during New York Fashion Week. There was no shortness of amazement as each model came down the runway. Right away the collection mirror an Amish community, however, at that moment I was not aware the Amish culture was the designers inspiration. I also thought about M. Night Shyamalan “The Village” although it was far from the movie, but it reminded me of it.
“Akkaya stated his inspiration as “Amish Meets Punk”. The inspiration was clear throughout the collection from the first look to the last. Akkaya created a collection that reinterprets the iconic clothing of the Amish sect who, to this day, turn their backs to the Modern Age, while merging it with the attitude and detailing of the Punk Subculture. The cameras & phones went a-flutter when the key looks appeared (48 in total!). In his words, Hakan Akkaya says, “this season, my collection attracts all of the attention of femicide, justice, revolt and equality. Women who rock the runway – Women who rock the world!”
Hardware on most garments became a key item. Each metal ring was placed strategically with care, not just for decoration, but as a major role to bring in the “punk.”
The designer came out during the finale and surprised us all as he covered his eyes with a black lace eye mask and happily danced around the runway. Everyone cheered with excitement as he blew kisses and took in the moment of his great achievement.
On our seats was a goody bag with a mini singer sewing kit. Fully loaded with the basic tools to start sewing and be inspired. Thank you HAKAN AKKAYA and Singer.
